Grazing in Michiana
For generations, livestock producers have recognized the value of trees when it comes to raising cattle or other livestock. A wooded area can provide shade on a hot summer afternoon, shelter from winter winds and another place for animals to find forage. For some producers, putting livestock into a wooded area can also be a practical way to make use of land that would otherwise produce little income. But there is an important difference between just grazing cattle in the woods and practicing active silvopasture.
Silvopasture originates from the Latin word "Silva," which translates to the English "forest" and is an ancient agroforestry practice integrating trees, forage, and livestock for mutual benefits.
Silvopasture is the intentional integration of trees, forage and livestock on the same piece of land, with all three components being actively managed.
In other words, a producer is not simply adding cattle or livestock to a forest. They are managing a pasture as well as an actively managed and harvestable tree crop.
That distinction matters because simply turning cattle into an unmanaged woodlot can create problems. Livestock may damage young trees, disturb wetlands and other vulnerable forested areas, overgraze desirable plants, compact soil around frequently used areas and create muddy conditions. True silvopasture requires planning for both the livestock, the trees, the pasture, the landscape's biodiversity, and the soil underneath.
The biggest attraction of silvopasture is that one piece of land can produce several products at the same time. A well-designed system can produce livestock, healthy soils, forage and a future tree crop. While the trees are growing toward harvest, livestock can provide annual income from the same acreage. The USDA National Agroforestry Center describes this as "a system that can provide both short- and long-term income, with grazing helping provide cash flow while the tree crop matures."
For a livestock producer, that can change the way marginal or underused acres are viewed. Instead of choosing between pasture and tree crops, the goal is to make the two work together. The trees themselves, however, need to have a purpose. A row of random trees scattered through a pasture may provide shade, but that alone does not necessarily make the system silvopasture. The tree component needs to be actively managed with a future harvestable product in mind.
Depending on the farm and location, that might include high-value timber, nuts, fruit, Christmas trees or another marketable tree product.
This is one of the most important differences between forest grazing and silvopasture. Forest grazing may simply mean livestock are allowed to utilize an existing woodland.
Silvopasture is a deliberately designed production system in which the producer manages the trees, forage and livestock together.
One of the most obvious benefits of trees is shade. Heat stress can reduce livestock performance, alter grazing behavior and decrease animal comfort. Pastures high in fescue grass without adequate shade can be detrimental for livestock producers from the endophytes. Furthermore, increased soil temperatures on pastures decreases soil microbial activity and can inhibit forage regrowth, especially in overgrazed pastures.
Trees can reduce the amount of solar radiation reaching animals and can create cooler conditions beneath the canopy and in the soil. A 2023 study from Arkansas State University comparing temperate silvopasture with conventional pasture found lower temperatures in both the soil and cattle within the silvopasture system.
The researchers also found that "cattle weight gain and forage production were similar between the systems, meaning the additional tree component did not necessarily come at the expense of livestock production." Shade can be particularly valuable during periods when cattle would otherwise spend more time seeking relief from the sun rather than grazing. Simply put, if your animals are not eating, they aren't gaining and that is hurting your weights when they get to market.
Trees can provide another form of protection as well. In the right arrangement, they can reduce exposure to wind and severe weather. This can be particularly useful in the Great Lakes region, where livestock may experience hot, humid summers followed by cold, windy winters. The goal, however, should not be to create a completely shaded pasture. Forage still requires sunlight. A silvopasture system therefore requires enough open space and canopy management to maintain productive forage underneath and between the trees.
But the benefits of silvopasture are not only limited to what happens above ground.mTrees add roots and organic material to the soil while livestock return nutrients through manure and urine. Tree roots can occupy soil at different depths than many pasture plants, potentially allowing the system to use water and nutrients from a larger portion of the soil profile. Research has found promising results in this area.
Trees can also help slow water movement across the landscape. Their roots stabilize soil, while vegetation beneath the trees can help protect the soil surface from erosion. Earlier work reviewing silvopasture systems found "potential benefits including improved nutrient cycling, reduced runoff and greater soil and water protection."
There is an important caveat, however. Soil benefits are not automatic. A poorly managed silvopasture can still suffer from compaction, erosion and nutrient concentration. Cattle tend to congregate around waterers, mineral feeders, shade and other high-use areas. If stocking density or grazing duration is not managed, those areas can become damaged. Good grazing management remains good grazing management, even when trees are involved.
Perhaps the greatest challenge of silvopasture is that livestock and trees do not always want the same thing.
A young tree may represent a valuable future crop to the producer but an interesting scratching post to a cow. Livestock can rub against trunks, break branches and browse young trees. Protection may be necessary while trees become established. Trees also compete with forage for sunlight, water and nutrients. As the canopy develops, forage production beneath the trees can decline if too much shade develops.
This means the tree component has to be managed over time through practices such as spacing, pruning and selective thinning. This is another reason why silvopasture should not be confused with simply allowing a pasture to become overgrown with trees. The producer needs to think decades ahead. Where will the trees eventually be harvested? How will equipment move through the system? Can cattle and livestock still access forage? Will fencing interfere with timber harvest? Will the selected tree species remain valuable as the stand develops? These questions need to be considered before trees are planted.
Silvopasture offers an interesting form of income diversification. Livestock can provide annual or seasonal income while the trees represent a longer-term investment. That can be attractive, but the longtime horizon is also one of the system's biggest disadvantages. A cow can produce a calf in roughly a year. A tree crop may take decades to reach its highest value.
There are also establishment costs. Tree seedlings, protection from livestock and wildlife, fencing, pruning, weed control and additional management can all require money and labor. Producers may also need to learn skills that are outside traditional livestock management. A 2026 national survey of 1,747 silvopasture producers provides a useful reality check. "Producers identified improved animal welfare and wildlife habitat among the leading benefits, while added labor, management complexity and maintenance expenses were among the major challenges." Yet the same survey found that "87% of respondents planned to maintain or expand their silvopasture acreage."
High-value timber species and trees producing edible crops were particularly important to producers, showing that the tree component is not simply decorative, it can be an important part of the farm's long-term production plan.
So, are silvopastures right for every farm? Probably not. Silvopasture requires a producer to manage a livestock enterprise and a tree enterprise simultaneously. That means more planning and a willingness to think years or decades into the future. There are also questions about markets. A tree only has value as a crop if there is a market for the eventual product. Producers should understand what buyers want, how long trees will take to mature and what management will be required along the way.
For some farms, however, the combination could make a great deal of sense. A producer with suitable land, access to a tree market and an interest in long-term investment may be able to create another source of income without giving up livestock production. The trees can provide shade and shelter for cattle, while the livestock utilize forage between and beneath the trees.
Perhaps most importantly, silvopasture changes the question from "Should this land be pasture or woodland?" to "Can this land produce both?" That is the real promise of silvopasture. It is not simply putting cows in the woods. It is not planting a few trees in a pasture and walking away. It is a carefully managed system where livestock, forage and trees each have a job. For Great Lakes livestock producers looking toward the future, that combination may offer an opportunity to produce food today while growing another crop for tomorrow.
