Steer Leads Ottawa County Sale

Receipts from the Ottawa County 4-H livestock auction on July 30 in Holland, Mich. were $604,206.50. There were 199 member participants and 265 market animal projects this year.
Tenley Roetman of Zeeland led the way in the beef show. She showed the grand champion steer, earning $5.50 per pound ($8,008) from J.R. Blueberry of Holland. The steer weighed 1,456 pounds. Standing in the reserve champion spot was Tenley's sister, Brinsley, who sold her 1,498-pound steer for $4.25 per pound ($6,366.50) to J&H Oil Co. of Grand Rapids.
In the dairy beef sale, Vaida VonDobschutz of Zeeland won grand champion with her 1,505-pound dairy steer. It sold for $3.50 per pound ($5,267.50) to Elite Concrete Solutions of West Olive. Next was Zeeland's Waylon Sorenson with the reserve champion dairy steer. At 1,604 pounds, the steer brought $3.25 per pound ($5,213) from Acme Pallet and Box of Holland.
Another beef sale involved the reserve champion market heifer shown by Brett Mazurek of West Olive. He sold the 1,604-pound heifer for $3 per pound ($4,812) to VanDerKamp Heating and Cooling of Hamilton.
In swine, Joe VanKampen of Holland exhibited the grand champion barrow and grand champion gilt. Morren Feeds of Holland purchased the 294-pound barrow for $5 per pound ($1,470), and Nykamp Trucking of Hudsonville had the high bid of $4.50 per pound ($1,282.50) on the 285-pound grand champion gilt.
The reserve champion barrow shown by Josie Vannett of Zeeland brought $5.50 per pound ($1,474) from Skylark Machine of Zeeland. The hog weighed 268 pounds.
Piper Wind of Hudsonville sold the reserve champion gilt for $4.75 per pound ($1,377.50) to Preferred Machine of Jenison. The hog weighed 290 pounds.
In dairy feeder calves, Brooklyn Nienhuis of Zeeland sold the grand champion for $10.50 per pound ($5,281.50) to Morren Crops and Cattle. Skyler Raak of Holland sold the reserve champion for $6 per pound ($2,682) to Farmer's Co-op Elevator Co.
The reserve champion heifer feeder calf was exhibited by Paisley Wind of Hudsonville. She received $8.25 per pound ($3,531) from TTR Farms of Fruitport, Mich.
In sheep, the grand champion wether was shown by Tenley Roetman. She sold the 129-poounder for $13 per pound ($1,677) to Farm Bureau Insurance/Hop Agency. Next was the reserve champion wether exhibited by Rebecca Russcher of Zeeland. Her 163-pound lamb brought $15 per pound ($2,445) from Farm Bureau Insurance/Hop Agency.
The same two 4-H'ers repeated their success in the ewe show, with Tenley showing the 128-pound grand champion and Rebecca showing the 144-poound reserve. Tenley received $10 per pound ($1,280) from J.R. Blueberry, while Rebecca earned $10 per pound ($1,440) from GreenMark Equipment of Holland.
Brett Mazurek of West Olive earned $6.25 per pound ($681.25) for the grand champion meat goat. The high bid came from Morren Feeds. Joe Van Kampen showed the reserve champion meat goat, earning $8 per pound ($784) from Farm Bureau Insurance/Hop Agency.
With the grand champion meat doe, Jackson Raak of Hudsonville earned $11 per pound ($1,012) from Townline Hatchery of Zeeland. The reserve champion meat doe belonging to Mackenzie Raak of Hudsonville brought $10.50 per pound ($840) from Townline Hatchery of Zeeland.
In the dairy wether show, Aurelia and Breanne Persenaire of Hudsonville finished one and two. On July 30, they auctioned off both animals. Aurelia sold the grand champion dairy wether for $6.50 per pound ($468) to A&B Farms of Holland. Breanne sold the reserve champion for $5.50 per pound ($407) to A&B Farms.
