Yakym Visits Milford Food Bank

U.S. Rep. Rudy Yakym (R-Ind.) last Monday stopped by the Milford Food Bank during his Hoosier Heartland tour of District 2 counties during Congress' August recess.
"The Milford Food Bank is a food bank that is by the community and for the community. It's a whole community coming together to serve individuals in the community who are hungry," Yakym said, when asked why he selected the food bank as a stop on his tour.
He also described food banks and pantries as "the ultimate safety net" for society.
Yakym is working on a bill to make it mandatory for individuals to show identification as proof of address when picking up food at food pantries. He said this would assist pantries in ensuring the food for designated for local community members stays in that community.
During the visit, he offered to advocate for the food bank any time it applied for government grants.
"It was cool to have him reach out for a visit so we could share what we do here in the area," said Milford Food Bank development manager Angie Deak.
It was the first time a state politician visited the facilities. Milford Food Bank recently opened a new building for storage, which became fully operational earlier this summer. The organization provides resources for over 240 pantries in 27 counties across Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
Following the recent storms and flooding during the week of Aug. 9, Milford Food Bank sent a trailer of supplies to Cambridge City to assist in flood relief efforts.
Yakym's tour of Northern Indiana on Monday included an Indiana Corn and Soy shop talk at Stoller Farms in Bremen, along with visits to Grass Creek Cattle Co. in Kewanna and other stops in Rochester and Winamac. The tour runs throughout August and includes stops at each of the 11 counties in the second district of Indiana.
