Olsen Wins Top Bid at Sale in Winamac

At the Pulaski County 4-H Livestock Auction in Winamac on Wednesday, Gatlen Olson's grand champion animal drew a top bid of $4,600, nearly double the next highest champion sale at $2,400.
Temperatures in Pulaski County rose to surpass 100 degrees Fahrenheit, prompting some 4-Hers to opt out of showing their animals in person out of concern for the animals' health; instead, they displayed the earned banner. Despite the extreme heat, the Public Sale totaled $65,000 in bids this year, down $7,700 from last year's total of $72,700.
A total of 106 animals crossed the auction block, spanning divisions from swine and steers to rabbits, poultry, goats and lambs. A total of 51 swine brought in $32,150; 13 meat goats, $6,350; 16 poultry animals, $6, 750; 10 Steers, $11,050; eight market lambs, $4,000; three meat class animals, $1,100; two feeder calves, $1,000; one heifer, $500; one dairy goat, $1,000 and one breeding ewes, $550.
The Miss Pulaski County item this year was presented by Taylee Ringen; it was sold for $550 to Tri-County Manure. It featured a summer-time patriotic cooler bag stocked with fireworks, soda, sunscreen and towels, along with a tote bag.
The Kiss the Pig event also occurred with Kaiden Gutwein, who kissed the pig as a beginning to the auction.
Olson of Star City claimed the grand champion barrow, a crossbred weighing 250 pounds. The animal fetched $4,600 overall, or $18.40 per pound, from buyer friends and family of Gatlen Olson. Kayden Hilton of Winamac took reserve champion in barrows with an animal weighing 247 pounds. The entry brought $1,700 total ($6.88 per pound), purchased by Braun Ability.
Jocelyn Hileman of Winamac was named grand champion in meat pen rabbits.The pen sold for a total of $350 to 1st source bank. John Hileman of Winamac earned reserve champion. He raked in $400 with the sale of his reserve champion to Country Grown.
Kinzey Hileman of Winamac won grand champion, single fryer. The grand champion single fryer brought in $350, purchased by Prairieland Partners.
Roni Garbison of Star City claimed grand champion commercial duck. The grand champion duck drew a final bid of $400 from 1st Source Bank. Brooks Sehstedt of Winamac took reserve champion duck. The reserve champion duck sold for $500 to Madelyn and Emelia Stamper.
Destiny Gibson of Medaryville was named grand champion roaster, a meat class chicken. The winning bird earned $350 in a sale to Country Grown.
Brody Bonnell of Star City claimed grand champion turkey. The grand champion turkey fetched $700 from Shay and Heather Kasten. Kinize Bonnell of Star City claimed reserve champion Turkey. The turkey sold for a total of $700 to Tom Kasten.
Cameron Hilton of Winamac won grand champion beef steer, a crossbred weighing 1,550 pounds. The steer commanded $1,500, averaging 96 cents per pound, and was purchased by Good Oil Company. Presley Johnson of Winamac also placed in the crossbred steer division with an animal weighing 1,264 pounds. The reserve champion sold for a total of $2400, or $1.89 per pound, to Standard Industrial Supply.
Sophie Leman of Winamac was named grand champion in beef starter steer with an animal weighing 291 pounds. the 4-H'er walked away $500 ($1.71 per pound) richer after purchase by Madelyn and Emelia Stamper. Karaline Keller of Monterey took reserve champion in Dairy Feeder Calves weighing 460 pounds. The animal sold for a total of $500, or $1.08 per pound, to T&T Farms Inc.
Tate Tijerina of Winamac earned reserve champion in dairy beef steers with an animal weighing 1,543 pounds. The entry sold for a total of $1600, or $1.03 per pound, from buyer Good Oil Company.
Alana Kasten of Francesville claimed grand champion dairy, a winter calf. The grand champion sold for a total of $500 to Madelyn and Emelia Stamper.
Leah Mitchell of Winamac won grand champion meat wether with an animal weighing 95 pounds. The animal sold for a total of $650, or $6.84 per pound, to Winding River Ag Solutions. Alana Kasten of Francesville took reserve champion with a goat weighing 67 pounds. The animal earned $300 or $4.47 per pound in a sale to T&T Farms Inc.
Sophie Leman of Winamac was named grand champion meat market doe with an animal weighing 95 pounds. The goat commanded $300, or $3.15 per pound, was purchased by Miller Beef. Casey Lynch of Francesville earned reserve champion with an animal weighing 92 pounds. He raked in $250 or $2.71 per pound, bought by Shay and Heather Kasten.
