Steuben Co. 4-H'ers Rake in Record Sales

by Jerry Goshert

Published: Friday, July 3, 2026

Three 10-year 4-H'ers sold premiums on their grand champion livestock during the Steuben County 4-H auction last Thursday in Angola. The final-year 4-H'ers were Cade Bachelor, Natalie Booth and Katie Ridenour.

The annual 4-H auction, with 149 lots, generated a record $241,080, with add-on money still coming in at press time. That compares with $201,547 raised in last year's auction, which had 146 lots.

Bachelor, son of Cory and Stacy Bachelor of Orland, received a record premium for his grand champion dairy cross feeder calf. A support group (see list at end of story) paid $8,000 as a premium on the 540-pound calf. Cade also exhibited the supreme champion dairy heifer and grand champion dairy feeder calf.

He credited his parents and grandparents for encouraging him in his 4-H career.

"They pushed me to be the best I can and do the work at home," he said. "It pays off at the shows."

The 18-year-old is undecided on a career path but plans to travel to New Zealand in January to work in the dairy industry there.

As this year's Miss Steuben County 4-H Fair, Booth earned a record $7,275 for her 1,610-pound grand champion dairy cross steer. The premium came from a group of bidders (see list). She is the daughter of Denver and Marjorie Booth.

This is the second straight year Natalie has exhibited the top dairy cross steer. She said the key is putting forth the time and effort toward the project.

"We definitely fed him a lot and just walked around the yard," she said. "I really worked and talked with him so that he knew my voice," she said.

The 2026 fair was bittersweet for the 18-year-old from Orland. One of her friends recently passed away.

"It was hard for me to get out here with a smile on my face, but I know she wanted me to do it," she said.

This fall, Natalie plans to attend Ball State University, and she is also looking forward to competing in several pageants, including the Miss Indiana State Fair pageant in January.

Ridenour, of Angola, sold the premium on her 1,520-pound grand champion dairy steer for $1,625 to a support group (see list). She is the daughter of Jen Betts and Jake Ridenour.

This year, Katie was selected as the overall 4-H achievement winner in Steuben County.

"I've been super proud and really grateful for all the opportunities that I've gotten," she said. "I've gone all the way to Alaska to teach and then to Washington, D.C. for some leadership conferences. Four-H has taken me a long way."

Like Booth, Ridenour plans to attend Ball State University this fall. She intends to study nursing.

The highest premium in last week's auction went to Angola's Willow Grate, who showed the 577-pound grand champion beef feeder. She received a record $9,000 from supporters (see list).
