Hahn Auctioneers has been selected to receive the Agri-Business Award from the Elkhart County Agricultural Society. The award will be presented during the Ag Society's annual meeting next Monday in Goshen.
The Nappanee-based auctioneering business was started by Roger Hahn in 1964. Four years later, his son, Phil, began working with him. Roger and Phil Hahn specialized mostly in farm equipment auctions, antiques, estate and livestock auctions, with a strong emphasis on Holstein dairy cattle all over Indiana and Michigan. In the 1980s, Phil became more involved with bankruptcy and commercial auctions, as the agriculture auction business occurred less often.
In 1994, Phil's son, Jason, joined the auction company, and Brian Wuthrich joined in 1993. Over the years, the real estate portion has become a larger part of Hahn's business. They currently have six employees.
Most of their auctions occur in Indiana and Michigan, but they have traveled to other states, including Idaho, Georgia, and Texas. Many of their farm machinery auctions have been webcast to reach across the United States and Canada.
Keys to the success of Hahn Auctioneers is advertising through word of mouth and doing what they say they will do. They have also benefitted by adapting to changes in the market with online auctions.
They have also handled many benefit auctions, such as Boys and Girls Club, varied communities, churches and multiple area 4-H fairs.
