An agriculture teacher from northern Indiana has been named Ag Educator of the Year for Indiana.

Jim Wildermuth, ag teacher and FFA advisor at North Miami High School, was selected as the winner of the Golden Owl award for Indiana.

Wildermuth has been an ag teacher for 26 years, including the last 13 at North Miami. Prior to coming to North Miami, he taught at schools in Pulaski, Wis., in Columbia City and also at the Heartland Career Center in Wabash.

When asked to comment on the award, Wildermuth said he was "overwhelmingly humbled."

He grew up on swine, dairy and crop farm in northern Miami County and graduated in 1995 from North Miami High School. In 1999, he earned a degree in agriculture education from the University of Wisconsin - River Falls, and a year later completed his master's degree at the same institution.

Wildermuth is only the third ag teacher at North Miami, following in the footsteps of Keith Overton and Glen Jones.

"I feel very privileged to work with the outstanding students, families and staff at North Miami that have and continue to value agriculture and the opportunities it presents our youth," he added.

On the personal side, he and his wife Stacie have been married for 25 years and have three children: Clay, Calvin and Joannah. He is active with the Akron Church of God.

When not at school, Wildermuth enjoys operating a small grain, hay and livestock farm with his family.

As the grand prize winner for Indiana, Wildermuth receives a trophy and $3,000 in funding to help bring new opportunities to the ag program at North Miami.

The award was presented by Nationwide and was based on nominations.
