A Good Week for Harvest in Mich.
Published: Friday, November 8, 2024
The following is from the Michigan Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending Nov. 3.
Favorable weather last week allowed farmers to continue to make excellent harvest progress. There were 6.2 days suitable for fieldwork.
Corn for grain progress remained ahead of schedule, reaching 82% harvested.
Soybeans harvested and winter wheat planted were nearly finished for the season. Seventy-eight percent of wheat had emerged.
Permanent piling of sugarbeets has begun, although warm weather caused several shutdowns last week.
The Michigan potato harvest was virtually complete. A few growers were shipping straight from the field, due to favorable weather and the relatively large crop. Reports indicate that solids were good, and recovery rates have been above average.
Other activities last week included soil testing, planting cover crops, hauling grain, fall tillage, tending to livestock, and farm planning for next year.
The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2023 and five-year average) showed: corn harvested for grain, 82, 62, 37, 46; soybeans harvested, 95, 91, 66, 70; winter wheat planted, 96, 89, 77, 87; winter wheat emerged, 78, 65, 65, 73; sugarbeets harvested, 70, 38, 66, 67.
