Ottawa Youth Shows 4 Champions

The Ottawa County Fair ran July 22-27 in Holland, Mich. Approximately 167 kids participated in the livestock projects. On July 26, those youths sold 358 animals in the livestock auction, which grossed over $500,000.

Joe VanKampen of Holland was a big winner, as he showed the grand champion gilt, reserve champion barrow, grand champion market wether and grand champion market doe.

VanKampen sold his 285-pound grand champion gilt for $6 per pound ($1,710) to Morren Brothers Agri Service. His 274-pound reserve champion barrow brought $6.50 per pound ($1,781) from A&B Farms.

With his two grand champion goats, VanKampen received $3,419. The market wether sold for $644 to Pickle Street Veterinary Service, and the market doe brought $2,775 from Thunderbolt Club Goats.

In the beef auction, Grace Nicholls of Zeeland earned $5.75 per pound ($7,578.50) from the sale of her 1,318-pound grand champion steer. Barber Ford had the high bid. Next was the reserve champion steer shown by Brennan Koop of West Olive. Brenner Oil Co. purchased the 1,280-pounder for $4.50 per pound ($5,760).

Mattea Bruursema of West Olive exhibited the grand champion dairy beef steer. The 1,583-pounder fetched $4.50 per pound ($7,123.50) from Pigeon Creek Golf Course. The 1,575-pound reserve champion dairy steer belonging to Lucas Cronkright brought $3.75 per pound ($5,906.25) from Ron Meyer and Associates. 

Amanda Nicholls of Zeeland sold her grand champion beef heifer, which weighed 1,285 pounds, for $5 per pound ($6,425) to JR Blueberry. Claire Helder of Hamilton sold the reserve champion beef heifer for $4.10 per pound ($4,239.40) to Earl's Meats. The heifer weighed 1,034 pounds. 

In the swine auction, the 310-pound grand champion barrow shown by Paisley Ponstein of Hamilton sold for $6 per pound ($1,860) to Smallegan Farms. Morgan Mazeikis of Zeeland sold the 247-pound reserve champion gilt for $3.75 per pound ($926.25) to Nykamp Trucking.  

In the goat auction, Eliana Persenaire of Hudsonville sold her grand champion dairy wether for $435 to Shamrock Meats LLC. Gabriel Becksvoort of Zeeland auctioned off her reserve champion dairy wether for $55 to Family Farm and Home.

The reserve champion market goat shown by Mackenzie Raak of Hudsonville brought $820 courtesy of Townline Hatchery. The reserve champion market doe belonging to Mackenzie Raak of Hudsonville sold for $902 to Shadow Heating and Cooling.

In sheep, Lilly Nyland of Holland and Rebecca Russcher of Zeeland finished one-two in both the ewe and market wether shows. Nyland sold the 125-pound grand champion ewe for $14 per pound ($1,750) to Nyland Enterprises. Next was Russcher and her 135-pound reserve champion ewe. The Zeeland youth earned $5.75 per pound ($776.25) from GreenMark Equipment.

Nyland returned to the ring to sell her grand champion market wether, which weighed 132 pounds. She earned $6 per pound ($792) from A&B Farms. Russcher then sold the 130-pound reserve champion wether for $7 per pound ($910) to Farm Bureau Insurance/Hop Agency. 

Evie Holstege of Zeeland led the way in the feeder calf sale. She sold her 558-pound grand champion dairy feeder for $4 per pound ($2,232) to Elite Concrete Solutions. Teegan Huffman of Hudsonville sold the reserve champion dairy feeder for $4.25 per pound ($2,112.25) to Berghorst Drywall. The calf weighed 497 pounds.

The grand champion beef feeder calf was exhibited by Tenley Roetman of Zeeland. She sold the 502-pounder for $8 per pound ($4,016) to JR Blueberry. Emily Ponstein of Hamilton auctioned off the reserve champion beef feeder for $6.75 ($2,720.25) to R&M Fabrication.

Kinsley Wassink of Zeeland received $4.50 per pound ($2,007) from the sale of her 446-pound grand champion heifer feeder calf. The reserve champion heifer feeder, shown by Jackson Gelder of Hudsonville, brought $5 per pound ($2,735) from Kuperus Construction.
