On That Note
June is a great time for a good old-fashioned cookout. In the backyard or at a local park, they get people outside into the fresh air. It seems to me that fresh air is what keeps people from going crazy, and we all need a little bit more of it.
Unfortunately, I have not been outside much this past week, mainly because I've been busy attending evening events and avoiding the recent rains. But staying inside gives a body a hard case of cabin fever, especially when the sun comes out and the sky starts popping with a bright, blue hue.
Throughout the rainy season, I have read books, watched movies, cleaned my house and began experimenting with different cooking techniques and styles. But now I'm ready to go outside. I've created so many new organizational systems for myself I can hardly find anything, and somehow, despite all the cleaning, I feel like a mess. It must be the stale, indoor air getting to my brain cells. But the rain is still coming.
So, now I ask myself, "Why am I avoiding the rain?"
It may be the crazy that has settled around my head, but I just don't know. I mean seriously, why do people avoid going out in the rain? It's not like I or anybody else will melt.
In fact, I used to spend lots of time running around in the rain during high school, when I worked at a summer camp. Granted, those hours were spent keeping campers calm in severe weather, leading them to a severe weather shelter and monitoring the sky for signs of mischief. By the end, I would often look like a drowned rat.
You may be asking at this time why I wouldn't have rain gear, especially since I am such a stickler about being prepared. Well, let me tell you, I did have rain gear. But, more often than not, a camper would leave their raincoat at home, so I would give mine away for the time being.
And, before that, my family would take advantage of a hot, rainy forecast to go to the beach. Nobody likes to swim when it's raining, which, if you think about it, doesn't make much sense since getting wet is the point. But I'm not complaining because we would often have the beach to ourselves.
On that note, don't be afraid to enjoy a rainy day every now and then. After all, they say it is just a little liquid sunshine.
