Corn Harvest Lags Five-Year Pace

Published: Friday, November 10, 2023

The following is from the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending Nov. 5.

Corn dry down progress remained slow as cool, damp weather persisted.

Soil moisture levels increased slightly from the previous week, with 71% of topsoil moisture reported as adequate or surplus.

The average temperature for the week was 42.6 degrees F, 6.9 degrees below normal.

The amount of rainfall varied from none to 1.16 inches over the week.

The statewide average precipitation was .38 inches, .37 inches below normal.

There were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork.

Corn harvested for grain continued well behind its five-year average pace. Cool, wet weather continued to hinder corn dry down progress.

Soybean harvest progress was in line with the five-year average.

Over half of the state's winter wheat had emerged, with 73% of the crop rated in good to excellent condition. Some parts of Indiana saw snow.

Other activities for the week included FFA Convention attendance, grain hauling, livestock tending, machine maintenance and fertilizer applications.

The crop moisture content (last week, previous week, 2022 and five-year average) showed: field corn harvested for grain, 20, 21, 18, 18; soybeans harvested, 13, 13, 12, 13.

The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2022 and five-year average) showed: corn harvested for grain, 68, 56, 81, 76; soybeans harvested, 87, 79, 92, 85; winter wheat planted, 84, 72, 89, 88; winter wheat emerged, 61, 41, 60, 67.
