Indiana Crop Fields Get Timely Rain

The following is from the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending July 16.

Timely rainfall assisted in maintaining crop conditions throughout much of the state.

Topsoil moisture levels decreased slightly from the previous week, with 64% of topsoil moisture reported as adequate or surplus.

The average temperature for the week was 73.8 degrees F, 1.2 degrees below normal.

The amount of rainfall varied from none to 2.71 inches over the week.

The statewide average precipitation was .82 inches, .11 inches below normal.

There were 5.7 days suitable for fieldwork.

Corn silking progress continued behind its five-year average pace with 60% of the crop rated in good to excellent condition, up 7 percentage points from the previous week.

Soybean condition was also rated 60% good to excellent, up 5 percentage points from the previous week.

Winter wheat harvest was in full swing.

Livestock were reportedly doing well. Second cuttings of alfalfa and other hay were taken where regrowth was adequate.

Pasture conditions improved from the previous week, with 51% of pastures rated in good to excellent condition.

Other activities for the week included equipment maintenance, blueberry harvesting and mowing.

Topsoil moisture was rated very short, 11%; short, 25%; adequate, 60%; surplus, 4%.

Subsoil moisture was rated very short, 14%; short, 28%; adequate, 55%; surplus, 3%.

The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2022 and five-year average) showed: corn silking, 40, 15, 36, 45; corn dough, 4, 0, 3, 2; soybeans blooming, 42, 22, 43, 47; soybeans setting pods, 9, 2, 12, 17; winter wheat harvested, 89, 62, 93, 89; alfalfa hay, second cutting, 69, 51, 73, 67; other hay, second cutting, 51, 39, 54, 49.
