Corn Planting Underway in Indiana

The following is from the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending April 16.
Dry and abnormally warm weather aided in reducing excess soil moisture for many. Soil moisture levels decreased from the previous week, with 86% of topsoil moisture reported as adequate or surplus.
The average temperature for the week was 61.8 degrees F, 11.3 degrees above normal.
The amount of rainfall varied from none to .44 inches over the week.
The statewide average precipitation was .15 inches, .83 inches below normal.
There were 5.5 days suitable for fieldwork.
Warm, dry weather spurred fieldwork throughout Indiana. Corn and soybean planting was underway with 3% of corn and 2% of soybeans reported as planted.
Winter wheat jointing progressed ahead of the five-year average with 77% of the crop rated in good to excellent condition.
Livestock were reported to be in good condition as muddy field conditions diminish. Many pastures have begun to come out of dormancy.
Other activities for the week included tilling, fertilizer applications, herbicide applications, mint planting and machinery repairs.
The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2022 and 5-year average) showed: corn planted, 3, 0 0, 2; soybeans planted, 2, NA, 0, 1; winter wheat jointing, 38, 16, 22, 25.
