Harvest Progress Surges Ahead

Published: Friday, November 4, 2022

The following is from the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending Oct. 30.

Rainfall experienced by many throughout the State did little to slow harvest progress.

Soil moisture levels increased from the previous week, with 42% of topsoil moisture reported as adequate or surplus.

The average temperature for the week was 53.7 degrees F, 2.7 degrees above normal.

The amount of rainfall varied from .05 to 2.27 inches over the week. The statewide average precipitation was 1 inch, .49 inches above normal.

There were 5.3 days suitable for fieldwork.

Rain showers across the state did little to hinder harvest progress. Corn for grain harvest progress surpassed its five-year average pace.

Soybean harvest continued ahead of its five-year average.

Winter wheat planted met its five-year average. Short-term moisture provided by timely rains encouraged winter wheat emergence which was up 18 percentage points from the previous week.

Despite notable progress, winter wheat emergence continued behind its five-year average with 65% of the crop rated in good to excellent condition. Hay harvest neared completion.

Pasture conditions declined from the previous week with 18% of pastures rated in good to excellent condition.

Other activities for the week included fertilization applications, mowing stalks, wheat and rye certification, and tillage.

The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2021 and 5-year average) showed: corn harvested for grain, 71, 54, 61, 64; soybeans harvested, 87, 75, 66, 78; winter wheat planted, 81, 65, 74, 81; winter wheat emerged, 42, 24, 51, 57; alfalfa hay, fourth cutting, 92, 90, N/A, N/A; other hay, fourth cutting, 63, 52, N/A, N/A.
