Led by Sinnamon Steer, Miami 4-H Auction Generates $105,380

Competing in last week's Miami County 4-H Fair in Peru, Naomi Sinnamon of Kokomo exhibited grand champion steer for the first time in her eight-year career in 4-H. She says the difference was how hard she worked this year, putting extra time into her showmanship, washing, feeding and walking of the steer. The Hereford steer weighed 1,225 pounds and sold for $5,135, or $4.19 per pound, to a group led by Adam Hunt of Hunt's Outdoor Upkeep Inc.

Additional buyers included: First Farmers Bank & Trust, Kokomo Grain Co., Jim and Teri Smith, ACE Outdoors, Miller Herefords, B. Hensley Farms & Customs, Sinnamon Farms, Beacon Credit Union, Co-Alliance Michigantown, Round Prairie Seeds, Endsley Rendering Service, Kerkhove Ag Repair, Lisa and Ashley Lindley, Pugh Boer Goats, Brookston's Touch Handmade Signs, Kunkle Sales and Service, Pine Hill Pork Farms Inc., Connie Brewer/BI Vetmedica, Rob Fulkerson Patterson Veterinary Supply, Dobbs Legal Group, Mark Metcalf and CS Transport/Chad Strubble.

Kaden Miller of Kokomo showed the grand and reserve champion dairy feeder calves. These animals were not sold. He was also named the supreme showman of the Miami County Fair. The grand total of sales coming from the dairy feeder calves was $7,460.

The auction total was $105,380. Twenty-five animals (24 swine and one steer) were donated to Helping Hands of Miami County and the Macy food pantry.

Maggie Hughes of Peru owned the reserve champion beef steer, which did not sell. The beef steer total sale was $11,305 for three animals.

Jordan Weaver of Roann showed the grand champion dairy steer. The 1,465-pound animal was sold to Farm Credit of Mid-America for $1,900. Other buyers included: POET, Musselman Brothers Inc., Manchester Farm Center, Jim and Teri Smith, Redline Equipment of Logansport, 1100 North Innovations, TTG, Carrie Melloh, Becks Hybrids/Mike Marburger, and Mark and Margo Elrod.

During the auction, Weaver was in Europe for an international dairy judging contest, so Abby Richardson represented him in the sale. The total sale for his steer was $2,460, or $1.68 per pound. The grand total for dairy steer sales was $7,580 for three animals.

Samantha Jones of Peru is the owner of the reserve champion dairy steer. Her steer weighed 1,405 pounds. She did not sell it during the auction.

Parker Johnson of Macy exhibited the supreme champion dairy cow. He did not sell his milk during the auction and will show his cow at the state fair. Total sales of all cow milk was $4,940 for four lots.

Levi Merritt of Peru showed the 273-pound grand champion barrow. He sold it to Don and Patty Willson. His total sale was $2,310, or $8.46 per pound, and he donated 20 percent of his proceeds to the Sara Herrell Scholarship.

Merritt was one of many who dedicated a portion of their sales to scholarship funds. The total contributions to the Sara Herrell Memorial Scholarship was $3,047.25, and the Blake Sadowsky Memorial Scholarship contributions came to a total of $1,026.

Other buyers of Merritt's grand champion barrow were: First Farmers Bank & Trust, Beck's Hyrbrid/Brian Rice, Kokomo Grain Co., Co-Alliance Cooperative Inc., Tony and Beth Howard of Howard Swine, Cross Creek Ag Solutions, United Animal Health, Jim and Teri Smith, Ceres Solutions Co-op, Verlin Hershberger, Anderson's of Galveston, Keith Miller Excavating, Jerel and Connie Maple, Norris Insurance of Walton, CS Transport/Chad Strubble, Family Farm & Home, Leef Lawn Care and Crossroads Bank.

Laina Kling of Mexico showed reserve champion barrow. It weighed 264 pounds and sold for a total of $910, or $3.45 per pound. Buyers include: Nutrien Ag Solutions of Fulton, Jim and Teri Smith, Smithfield, Redline Equipment of Logansport, Ed Burns and Sons Trucking, Leef Lawn Care, Crossroads Bank, Beacon Credit Union and Becks Hybrids/Mike Marburger.

Alexandra Merritt of Peru sold the reserve champion gilt. It weighed 272 pounds and sold for a total of $2,435, or $895 per pound.

The total sales for all 44 swine were $53,160.

Cole Specht of Flora sold the grand champion dairy-type wether goat at the Miami County fair. His goat sold for $325 to Adam Hunt of Hunt's Outdoor Upkeep Inc. Additional buyers were First Farmers Bank & Trust, Jim and Teri Smith, Family Farm & Home, and DK Pence, making the grand total $885.

Wyatt Smith of Denver exhibited the grand champion for meat-type wether goats. He sold his goat for $550 to Brandon Hall, a private buyer. Additional buyers were Jim and Teri Smith, Leef Lawn Care, Family Farm & Home, Sharon and Steve Clark, and Beacon Credit Union, making the total price $985.

Karasyn Kuhn won reserve grand champion meat goat. She sold for a total of $1,055 to 12 separate buyers. Buyers included: Kokomo Grain Co., Manchester Farm Center, Jim and Teri Smith, Michael and Carmen Kuhn, Beacon Credit Union, Family Farm and Home, State Sen. Stacey Donato, Larry Kuhn, Leef Lawn Care, TTG, Ed Burns and Sons Trucking and Beacon Credit Union List the buyers. The goat total sales were $8,330 for nine animals.

Hannah Early of Denver exhibited the grand champion senior dairy goat and reserve champion lamb. She did not sell goat milk at the auction, but she did sell her lamb for $835 total. The total sale in goat milk was $2,180 and the total sale for sheep was $2,455.

Levi Bradshaw of Bunker Hill is the owner of the grand champion lamb. He did not sell his lamb at auction.

Kianna Sharp of Peru showed the grand champion poultry, and Josh Loshnowsky of Peru showed the reserve champion poultry. Sharp elected not to sell during the auction, and Loshnowsky's bird sold for a total of $385 to four separate buyers. The total poultry sale was $6,730 for 15 birds.

The grand champion and reserve champion rabbits did not sell during the auction. Total rabbit sales for three rabbits were $1,240.
