Tenlee Phares, 11, swept the competition last Saturday at the state Holstein junior show, winning both the Red and White and the Holstein shows. The competition was held at the Whitley County Fairgrounds in Columbia City.
Ten classes of Red and White and 15 classes of Holsteins were shown by youths of all ages. Phares was named grand champion after each class went through three rounds of judging, from class winners to champion and grand champion.
"I like having fun with all my friends," she said, referring to the Holstein shows.
Phares is a home-schooled 6th-grader from Noble County. She lives with her parents, Kellie and Tyler, and two brothers, Kooper and Tucker. Aside from showing Holsteins, she is involved in 4-H crafts and gymnastics. She says her hobby is crafting.
She hopes to be a doctor in the future, and the people she looks up to most are her parents "because they taught me everything," she said. Phares has been showing Holsteins for three years.
Phares was also led the junior champion of the Red and White show.
The reserve grand champion of the Holstein show was exhibited by Maddie Beyer, 15, of Columbus East High School in Bartholomew County. She lives with her parents, Leah and Matt, and brother, Brady. She is involved in 4-H, FFA, junior leaders, the junior fair board and the Club Olympia swim team. Her hobbies include hanging out with friends and teaching swimming lessons.
Other champions and reserve champions include: Oliver Nisen, reserve junior champion of the Red and White division; Caroline Egolf, junior champion of the Holstein division; and Caitlin Cox, reserve junior champion of the Holstein division.
The Indiana State Holstein open show was held on Monday. The grand champion was shown by Jeff Stookey of Milford, and the reserve grand champion was exhibited by Troyer View of LaOtto.
