Corn Harvest Nears the Finish Line

The following is from the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending Nov. 28.
Harvest progress inched closer to completion last week amid cold but mostly dry weather. Soil moisture levels declined slightly from the previous week, with 96 percent of topsoil moisture reported as adequate or surplus.
The average temperature for the week was 34.3 degrees F, 4.5 degrees below normal.
The amount of rainfall varied from none to .68 inches over the week. The statewide average precipitation was .43 inches, .60 inches below normal.
There were 4.7 days suitable for fieldwork.
Corn and soybean harvests had all but wrapped up last week, with downed corn comprising much of the remaining unharvested acreage. With harvest behind them, many farmers focused on fall tillage and fertilizer applications.
Winter wheat conditions improved marginally from the previous week.
Livestock were reported in good condition on winter pastures.
Other activities for the week included hauling grain, equipment maintenance and attending pesticide applicator programs.
