Harvest Progress Picks Up Speed

The following is from the Michigan Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending Nov. 7.

The majority of the state experienced drier conditions accompanied by cooler temperatures. There were 4.2 days suitable for fieldwork.

Corn harvest continued on pace as producers took full advantage of the favorable weather. Reported grain moisture was 19 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous week.

Soybean harvest continued behind the five-year average although significant progress was made compared to the previous week. Reported soybean moisture was 16 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous week.

Sugarbeet harvest continued on pace with the five-year average.

Winter wheat planting made progress as 74 percent of the crop was emerged.

Pasture condition remained good despite cooler temperatures. Fourth cuttings of hay continued in some areas but overall very little progress was made.

Other activities included fall tillage, hauling manure, scouting crops, and catching up on paperwork.

The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2020 and 5-year average) showed: corn harvested for grain, 62, 53, 74, 56; soybeans harvested, 65, 55, 90, 79; winter wheat planted, 85, 77, 98, 93; winter wheat emerged, 74, 66, 92, 79; alfalfa hay, fourth cutting, 77, 75, N/A, N/A; sugarbeets harvested, 80, 59, 93, 75.
