Winter Wheat Harvest Wraps Up

Published: Friday, July 30, 2021

The following is from the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending July 25.

Winter wheat harvest neared completion and crop progress was spurred forward thanks to ideal weather conditions last week. Soil moisture levels decreased from the previous week, with 91 percent of topsoil moisture reported as adequate or surplus.

The average high temperature across the state ranged from 81 to 91 degrees while the average low temperature ranged from 54 to 65 degrees depending on location.

The amount of rainfall varied from 0 to 1.53 inches over the week. There were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork.

Warm, dry weather conditions spurred crop growth and wheat harvesting progress. The winter wheat harvesting season was all but finished with harvest progress falling just behind the five-year average.

Corn silking and dough progress pushed ahead of their respective five-year averages. Despite concerns for blight, grey leaf spotting, and rust in some areas of the state, corn condition remained unchanged from the previous week with 73 percent of crop rated in good to excellent condition.

Soybean conditions also remained mostly unchanged despite concerns of yellowing due to standing water in fields and rust with 68 percent of crop rated in good to excellent condition.

Soybean blooming and pod setting both remained ahead of their respective five-year averages.

Livestock enjoyed rapid pasture growth with 64 percent of pasture rated in good to excellent condition. Second and third cuttings of alfalfa and other hay were taken when possible.

Activities for the week included field scouting, equipment repairs, fungicide and herbicide applications, and peach harvest.

Topsoil moisture was rated very short, 1 percent; short, 8 percent; adequate, 78 percent; surplus, 13 percent.

Subsoil moisture was rated very short, 2 percent; short, 9 percent; adequate, 78 percent; surplus, 11 percent.

The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2020 and 5-year average) showed: corn silking, 82, 59, 81, 71; corn dough, 19, 8, 15, 12; soybeans blooming, 74, 58, 77, 66; soybeans setting pods, 36, 19, 36, 34; winter wheat harvested, 96, 88, 99, 98; alfalfa hay, second cutting, 81, 68, 87, 83; alfalfa hay, third cutting, 17, 2, NA, NA; other hay, second cutting, 65, 55, 64, 66.
