Winter Wheat Harvest in Full Swing

The following is from the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending July 11.
Spotty rain did little to slow winter wheat harvests across the state. Soil moisture levels increased from the previous week, with 95 percent of topsoil moisture reported as adequate or surplus.
The average temperature for the week was 74 degrees F, .9 degrees below normal.
The amount of rainfall varied from .09 to 3.37 inches over the week. The statewide average precipitation was 1.54 inches.
There were 3.9 days suitable for fieldwork.
Winter wheat harvest progressed rapidly last week despite some rainfall. Some condition issues were reported in the Southeast with reports of wheat loads being rejected at the elevator due to vomitoxin.
Reports in other areas of the state were more favorable with better than expected yields and good quality.
Rainfall in the past few weeks that caused ponding and saturated soils had some soybeans yellowing and looking anemic. Some low areas that were flooded out had been replanted.
Corn conditions remained stable with 73 percent of crop rated in good to excellent condition.
Second cuttings of alfalfa and other hay were taken when possible and remained ahead of their respective five-year averages.
Pasture conditions were mostly unchanged from last week with 67 percent of pastures rated in good to excellent condition.
Activities for the week included roadside mowing, hay baling, county fair attendance, scouting fields, herbicide applications, produce marketing and nitrogen applications.
Topsoil moisture was rated very short, 1 percent; short, 4 percent; adequate, 70 percent; surplus, 25 percent.
Subsoil moisture was rated very short, 2 percent; short, 7 percent; adequate, 72 percent; surplus, 19 percent.
The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2020 and 5-year average) showed: corn silking, 27, 7, 27, 29; soybeans blooming, 38, 22, 41, 37; soybeans setting pods, 7, 1, 8, 9; winter wheat mature, 99, 94, 98, 97; winter wheat harvested, 77, 44, 78, 79; alfalfa hay, second cutting, 60, 48, 61, 57; other hay, second cutting, 44, 32, 37, 40.
