Inclement Weather Slows Harvest

The following is from the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending Nov. 17.
Early season snowfall combined with unseasonably cold weather hindered harvest progress last week. Precipitation was below average and confined to the beginning of the week, but unusually cold temperatures kept snow on the ground throughout the week.
The average temperature for the week was 28.1 degrees Fahrenheit, 13.5 degrees below normal.
The amount of precipitation varied from none to .59 inches over the week. The statewide average precipitation was .29 inches.
There were 3.3 days suitable for fieldwork.
Harvest progress halted last week due to snow events and extreme cold throughout the state, keeping corn harvest behind schedule.
The snow cover protected winter wheat from the harsh temperatures. Livestock were on winter pasture with hay being fed.
Other activities for the week included applying fertilizer, fall tillage, and hauling grain and hay.
The crop moisture content (last week, previous week, 2018 and 5-year average) showed: field corn harvested for grain, 20, 20, 16, NA; soybeans harvested, 13, 13, 14, NA.
The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2018 and 5-year average) showed: corn, harvested for grain 80, 72, 91, 91; soybeans, harvested 91, 88, 93, 95; winter wheat, planted 94, 93, 95, 96; winter wheat, emerged 82, 76, 83, 86.
