Cass Co. Fair Auction Exceeds $197,000

The Cass County (Ind.) 4-H Fair held its livestock auction last Saturday at the fairgrounds in Logansport. The event brought in a total of $197,720.65, down from last year's total of $209,190.14. A total of nine species were represented in the auction, with 218 lots were sold.

The auction kicked off with 17 lots of market beef steers, with a species total of $31,887.75. The grand champion was exhibited by Kenzie Mollenkopf of Logansport and sold for $5,085, or $4.24 per pound. The reserve champion was exhibited by Kendalyn Farrer of Logansport and sold for $3,497.40, or $2.68 per pound. Both were sold to large groups (see lists at end of story).

A total of 135 swine were sold, bringing in $93,499.60. The grand champion barrow was exhibited by Ethan Criswell of Idaville. The barrow sold for a total of $5,775.20, or $21.17 per pound, to a group of family and friends (see list). The reserve champion barrow was exhibited by Ethan Beaman of Twelve Mile and was not sold.

The dairy cattle section ran 15 lots of cattle, totaling $31,269.15. The grand champion dairy steer was exhibited by Allison Foerg of Logansport and sold for $6,051.15, or $4.34 per pound. Conner Walker exhibited the reserve champion dairy steer and sold it for $3,329.15, or $2.39 per pound. Both steers were sold to large groups (see lists).

This year's grand champion and reserve champion dairy feeder calves were both exhibited by Allison Foerg. Both feeder calves were withheld from the auction. The dairy feeder calf subtotal featured four calves and raised $3,986.50.

The dairy goat section brought in $7,089.40, with 15 lots sold. The grand champion dairy wether was shown by Jackson Temple of Logansport. The wether brought $2,253, or $28.16 per pound, from a large group of family and friends (see list). The reserve champion was exhibited by Jackson Temple of Logansport and was not sold in the auction.

Cheese was sold from the grand champion milking doe, bringing in $1,220. The grand champion milking doe was shown by Ryan Adams of Royal Center.

Milk from the grand champion milk cow, exhibited by Daniel McKaig from Logansport, raised $1,075, with the money donated to the Cass County 4-H Assn.

The meat goat section brought in $1,028.50, selling three animals. The grand champion and reserve champions were both exhibited by Ethan Beaman of Twelve Mile. Neither of the animals were sold in the auction.

The sale of poultry projects brought in $3,251.10 from nine lots. Grand champion exhibition poultry was shown by Grayce Horn from Twelve Mile. The bird sold for $700 to Security Federal Savings Bank, Horn family, JDS Concrete, Schmehl Family Farms, Kory and Mary Wilson, Gary Munson and Sprow family. The reserve champion exhibition bird was shown by Jackson Darland of Kokomo. It was not sold.

The grand champion commercial poultry exhibit was shown by Kassidy Henry of Peru. The reserve champion commercial poultry was exhibited by Levi Lowe of Twelve Mile. Neither were sold.

There were eight pens of rabbits sold, raising $2,514.30. The grand champion meat pen was exhibited by Benjamin Vandeburg of Walton and purchased for $400 by Sen. Randy Head. The reserve champion meat pen was exhibited by Joshua Vandeburg from Walton and sold for $225 to Starr, Austen and Miller LLP.

The sheep project generated $4,594.40 and ran 12 sheep through the auction. The grand champion market lamb, belonging to Ethan Beaman of Twelve Mile, was not sold. The reserve champion market lamb was owned by Jaden Younts of Walton. It was also was not sold.

Specialty items were also sold. This included different llama and alpaca wool products, "Best of Cass County" baskets, baked goods and a queen's kiss. This year, Miss Cass County Fair Natalie Shepler sold two kisses. At $7,000 apiece, the queen's kisses raised $14,000 to be put toward Cass County scholarships. A large group (see list) was involved in the purchase.
