Stephan Sells Steer for Record Price in Huntington

The 2017 Huntington County 4-H Fair concluded last Thursday with its annual livestock auction. The event saw 664 lots sell for $353,885.20. The auction was down on lots from 2016, which saw 675 lots, but up in total dollar amount, with the 2016 total being $303,287.

In beef, Ethan Stephan of Warren Twp. sold his 1,362 pound grand champion beef steer for a record breaking $7,800 ($5.73 per pound) to a large group of buyers (see list). The reserve champion steer was sold by Sarah Hunnicutt of Dallas Twp. for $5,000 ($3.58 per pound) to a large group of buyers (see list).

Laurissa Johnson of Warren Twp. sold the champion dairy steer. Johnson's steer sold for $600 to C & C Auto Body and Paint. Johnson also exhibited the reserve champion dairy steer, which did not sell.

Forty-three lots of beef sold for $38,450.

The grand champion barrow was exhibited by Audrey Rice and will be exhibited at the Indiana State Fair.

Owen Vickrey of Rock Creek Twp. sold his reserve grand champion barrow. Vickrey sold his 270-pound barrow for $2,500 ($9.26 per pound) to a large group (see list).

One hundred and sixty-four lots of pigs were sold for $66,185.

Johnna Cummins of Jefferson Twp. exhibited the grand champion market lamb. Cummins did not sell and plans to exhibit her lamb at the Indiana State Fair in August. Kenyan Buckland exhibited the reserve champion market lamb. Buckland also did not sell and will exhibit at the Indiana State Fair.

Twenty-six total lots of sheep sold for $8,475.

In the goat portion, Austin Amick of Jackson Twp. sold his seventy-pound, grand champion meat market goat for $3,150 to a large group of buyers (see list). Caden Brubaker of Rock Creek Twp. sold his reserve champion meat market goat for $1,350.

Samuel Close, Lancaster Twp,, sold his champion pygmy goat for $450 to Warpup Farms. The reserve pygmy was sold by Brendon Ramp of Polk Twp. for $450 to Larry Keiffer family.

Alyse Geiger sold the champion dairy market goat to Everything Flooring for $475.

There were 120 lots of goats that sold for $51,750.

The dairy club auctioned milk from their showmanship winners. Junior showmanship winner Dyson Pearson, Jackson Twp., was first in the ring to sell and sold his winning showmanship milk for $1,650 to a large group (see list).

Next in the ring was intermediate showmanship winner Macey Long. Long, Huntington Twp., sold her milk for $300 to C & C Auto Body and Paint. Mickensey Parker of Jackson Twp. sold her senior showmanship milk for $225 to Hillside Shooting Sports.

Wrapping up the dairy portion was master showmanship champion Hayley Jackson. Jackson of Salamonie Twp. sold the milk for $650 to Salamonie Mills.

Four lots sold in the dairy auction for $2,825.

In poultry, Marissa Trout of Jefferson Twp. sold her champion broiler for $300 to KS Photography, Jason Worster family and Mike Kreiger family.The reserve champion broiler was sold by Brent Kreiger to KS Photography and Mitch and Julie Trout family for $600.

One hundred and sixty total lots of poultry sold for $45,375.

Taylor Martz, of Salamonie Twp., sold her reserve champion rabbit for $600 to Tony Johnson. The grand champion meat pen was exhibited by Marissa Walter and did not sell. Kennady Chapin of Huntington Twp. sold the champion roaster for $300 to Brad and Kathy Blinn family. The champion stewer was sold by Amara Eckert of Dallas Twp. for $400 to Machelle and John Suchcicki family.

The rabbits brought in $39,750 on 149 lots.
