USDA Sees 15.1 Billion Corn Bushels

According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, national corn production is forecast at 15.1 billion bushels, up 11 percent from last year but down slightly from the September forecast. Based on Oct. 1, yields are expected to average 173.4 bushels per acre, down 1 bushel from September's forecast but up from the 5 bushels from 2015.

Area harvested for grain is forecast at 86.8 million acres, up slightly from the September forecast and up 8 percent from 2015.

U.S. soybean production is forecast at a record 4.27 billion bushels, up 2 percent from September and up 9 percent from last year. Based on Oct. 1 conditions, yields are expected to average a record 51.4 bushels per acre, up .8 bushel from last month and up 3.4 bushels from last year.

Area for harvest in the United States is forecast at a record 83 million acres, up slightly from September and up 2 percent from 2015.

Indiana

Indiana soybean growers expect to see record yields and production, according to Greg Matli, state statistician for the USDA, NASS, Indiana Field Office.

Soybean yield is forecast at 59 bushels per acre, up 9 bushels from the 2015 report. Total production is forecast at 335.1 million bushels, up 22 percent from last year.

Average corn yield in Indiana is expected to be 177 bushels per acre, up 27 percent from last year's yield. Total production is expected to be 957.6 million bushels, up 16 percent from 2015.

Michigan

Late season rains brought relief to dry areas and warmer temperatures helped bring crops to maturity, according to Marlo Johnson, director of the USDA, NASS, Great Lakes Regional Office.

The average corn yield in Michigan is expected to be 155 bushels per acre, down 7 bushels from 2015. Total production is forecast at 334.8 million bushels.

Michigan soybean yield is forecast at 47 bushels per acre, down 2 bushels from last year and unchanged from September's report. Total production is expected to be 98.2 million bushels.

Sugarbeet growers anticipate a yield of 31 tons per acre, down .7 tons from the previous year.
