Bunker Hills' Willson Sells Champion Barrow

The Miami County 4-H Fair in Peru wrapped up its fair week last Saturday with its 4-H auction, where 152 lots of animals were sold for a total of $115,826, up $3,145.50 from last year.

Kassandra Hattery of Peru sold her 1,320-pound grand champion beef steer for $5,650 ($4.28 per pound) to a large support group (see list at end of story). The reserve grand steer was exhibited by Roann's Ricki Parson. He sold the 1,235-pound steer for $2,200 to Manchester Farm Center and Pat and Laura Sadowsky.

A total of 11 beef and dairy steers sold for $34,950.

In the swine sale, Wyatt Willson of Bunker Hill exhibited the grand champion barrow that tipped the scales at 257 pounds. He sold his barrow for $2,975 ($11.58 per pound) to a large support group (see list). Tyler Burns of Bunker Hill sold the 266-pound reserve grand barrow for $3,625 ($13.63 per pound) to his support group (see list).

Sixty-nine swine lots sold for a grand total of $49,281.

The grand champion market lamb was exhibited by Tyler Burns, which did not sell and is State Fair-bound.

Only three lots of sheep sold for a total of $3,200.

Trent Burns of Bunker Hill sold his 62-pound grand champion meat goat wether for $1,275 ($20.56 per pound) to a support group (see list).

Six meat goats sold for a total of $2,975.

In the dairy goat sale, Cameron Early of Macy sold his grand champion dairy wether that weighed 80 pounds for $475 ($5.94 per pound) to Crop Production Services of Fulton, Kokomo Grain Co. and Wilson Fertilizer and Grain.

A total of $2,475 was raised on nine lots of dairy goats.

Jeffrey Eckrote of Akron sold the reserve grand champion dairy goat milk for $275 to Crop Production Services of Fulton.

Seven lots of goat milk sold for a total of $2,040.

In dairy milk sales, only one lot was sold. Laura Frye of Logansport sold a cheese basket for $450 to Crop Production Services of Fulton and First Merchants Bank.

In the dairy feeder steer sale, the grand champion and reserve champion did not sell. The grand champion was exhibited by Karli Miller, and Makinzie France exhibited the reserve. Both animals are State Fair-bound.

Nine total lots of dairy feeders sold in the auction and added $12,380 to the sale total.

In the rabbit sales, the grand champion meat pen was sold by Holly Keaffaber of Macy.

She sold her rabbits for $125 to CAPS—Scott Hanes. Denver's Abby Richardson sold her grand champion fryer for $450 to Don and Patty Willson, Whitehouse of Hair, Sarah Correll, Katelyn Hattery and Beacon Credit Union. The reserve grand champion fryer was sold by Holly Richardson of Denver for $375. Her buyers included: Mussleman Land Improvement, Katelyn Hattery, Sarah Correll and Beacon Credit Union.

The grand champion 4-class rabbit was exhibited and sold by Jared Chism-Kline of Peru for $150. Pefley Farm Equipment was the buyer.

Fourteen lots of rabbits were sold for a total of $2,575.

For poultry 4-H members, all members were allowed to sell eggs. There were no grand or reserve grand champions. Matthew Jelenek started the sale of eggs as the only 10-year poultry member. He sold his eggs for $250 to What-A-Wish and Mark and Loretta Deardorff.

A total of 22 lots of eggs were sold for $5,500.

In addition to livestock sales, a queen's kiss was sold for $300. Jacob Hanaway was the buyer.

A total of 15 swine were donated to the Miami County Helping Hands program. This program strives to meet the needs of struggling Miami County families. Auction buyers can choose to donate the meat from their purchase to MCHH.
