The 2013 Four County Forestry Field Day will be held Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. until noon at the forested property of John and Carol Ulmer in Elkhart County. The field day will be held just north of S.R. 119 on Old County Road 17; look for signs.
This event is cooperatively sponsored by the Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs) of Elkhart, Kosciusko, Marshall, and St Joseph counties. Participants at this year's forestry field day will be able to choose presentations from three distinct tracks:
Traditional Forestry Management will begin with a presentation on "Ash Trees, Ash Borers and Other Woodland Invasives" by Jeff Burbrink, Purdue University Extension, Elkhart County. Linda Byer, Indiana Department of Natural Resources—Division of Fish and Wildlife will speak on "Native Grasses/CRP/Classified Wildlife/Woodlands;" "Tree Planting will be discussed by Bruce Wakeland of Wakeland Forestry Consultants. The final presentation of this track will be "Planning for a Timber Harvest" by Steve Winicker, Indiana Department of Natural Resources—Division of Forestry.
Innovative Forest Management will also begin with a presentation on "Ash Trees, Ash Borers and Other Woodland Invasives" by Jeff Burbrink, but will then shift to a session on Pond Management by Jim Donahoe of Aquatic Weed Control. "Wild Edibles"will be the subject for Paul Steury, K-12 education coordinator, Merry Lea; and the track will end with a presentation on "Permaculture (Nuts, Ginseng, Etc.)" by Jon Zirkle, Merry Lea farm manager
The final track will feature Family Fun in the Woods, with Rick Glassman, St. Joseph County SWCD environmental educator, leading a "Woodland Scavenger Hunt;" "Tree Identification;" and "Catch and Release Fishing" in one of the Ulmer's ponds. Equipment will be provided for the fishing session.
