Kalamazoo Livestock Sale Tops $279,000

The Kalamazoo County Fair auction, held last Thursday, raked in a grand total of $279,846 on 296 lots. The numbers were slightly higher than last year's total, which was $258,203 on 255 lots.
In the swine sale, T.J. Gibson of Scotts exhibited the grand champion gilt. A support group (see list at end of story) contributed to the final sale price of $5,420, or $20 per pound.
Brianna Stockwell of Dowagiac sold her 273-pound grand champion barrow to John and Susan Compton. The buyers paid $2.85 per pound ($778.05). She also sold the reserve champion gilt for $620, or $2.50 per pound. The 248-pound hog sold to Dan Balkema of Balkema Excavating Kalamazoo.
The reserve champion barrow was sold by Jeffrey Hoagg of Vicksburg. The 302-pound hog brought $2,000, or $6.62 per pound. A support group (see list) contributed to the price.
Sara Grey of Climax sold her champion swine carcass for $7 per pound, or $1,820. A support group (see list) purchased the carcass.
The reserve champion swine carcass was sold by Denis Harmon of Augusta. The carcass weighed 255 pounds and sold for $3 per pound, or $765. Dave Pease of Cole Carter Inc. purchased the carcass.
Jason Myers of Scotts started off the beef sale with his 1,746-pound grand champion dairy beef. The champion bred and owned steer brought $3.50 per pound, or $6,161. A support group (see list) purchased the steer.
Jeffrey Hoagg of Vicksburg sold the grand champion beef steer. The 1,313-pound cow brought $7.20 per pound, or $9,450. A support group (see list) bought the steer.
The grand champion dairy steer carcass was exhibited by Conner Gibson of Climax. Jeff Balkema purchased the 1,845-pound carcass for $2 per pound, or $3,690.
T.J. Gibson of Scotts sold the grand champion beef carcass weighing 1,215 pounds for $3.10 per pound, or $3,766.50. Dan Balkema of Balkema Excavating of Kalamazoo purchased the carcass.
The reserve champion dairy steer was exhibited by Blake Borden of Climax. The steer weighed 1,690 pounds and sold for $1.35 per pound, or $2,281.50. Ty Hakman of Post Foods bought the animal.
Caleigh WilfongDyer of Kalamazoo earned reserve champion for her beef steer. The steer weighed 1,209 pounds and sold for $3.25 per pound, or $3,929.25. Brian and Kurt Steensma of Steensma Lawn and Power purchased the cow.
Jason Myers of Scotts sold his reserve champion dairy steer carcass for $2.35 per pound, or $3,795.25. Dan Balkema of Balkema Excavating purchased the 1,615-pound carcass.
The reserve champion beef carcass was sold by Blake Borden of Climax. The carcass weighed 1,175 pounds and brought $2.50 per pound, or $2,937.50. Stacey Denney of Denney Veterinary Service purchased the carcass.
Jack Tomadewicz of Schoolcraft sold the grand champion dairy feeder for $844, or $1.50 per pound, to Terry Ganton.
Abigail VanDyk of Kalamazoo earned reserve champion for her dairy feeder. The calf weighed 565 pounds and brought $1.35 per pound, or $762.75, from Dave Dyer of Dyer Farms.
A gallon of milk was sold for $3,065 to benefit the dairy projects. A buyer's group (see list) contributed to the sale total.
Natalie Bounds of Fulton started out the lamb sale with her grand champion ewe. Jackie Bounds of NB Buyers Group, John Hayward of Stienberger Spray Service, Shawn Fritz of BT Partnership, Ron Balowski of Battle Creek Farm Bureau, and Ryan and Jackie Bounds purchased the lamb for $1,360, or $10 per pound.
The grand champion wether was sold by Cale Buckham of Schoolcraft. The 145-pound lamb sold to Emelee Rajzer of Greenstone Farm Credit Service for $7 per pound, or $1,215. Buckham also sold the grand champion fleece for $325 to Stacey Denney of Denney Veterinary Service.
Grant Piper of Climax sold the grand champion carcass for $390 ($3 per pound). Rus and Ann Hollister purchased the 130-pound carcass.
Allison Kienast of Climax earned reserve champion for her ewe lamb. The 124-pound lamb sold for $18 per pound, or $2,232, to Mike and Julie Kienast.
Thomas Conklin of Marcellus exhibited the reserve champion wether. His 154-pound lamb was purchased by Gail VanderKolk of Burnips Equipment for $3.50 per pound, or $539. He also sold the reserve champion fleece for $200 to Bill and Linda Hinga.
In the rabbit sale, Rhyann Holden of Galesburg sold the grand champion roaster. Richard Glidden of Hollow Hickory Farm purchased the rabbit for $120.
The reserve champion roaster earned $600 for Abigail VanDyk of Kalamazoo. Jay and Sara VanDyk, Chelsea Musselman of Salon Harlow and Bill Longest purchased the rabbit. VanDyk also sold the grand champion fryer. Don Peck family purchased the rabbit for $125.
The reserve champion fryer was exhibited by Melissa Gray of Vicksburg. Cliff Lipscomb of Lipscomb LLC paid $125 for the rabbit.
Rebecca Gray of Vicksburg earned grand champion for the pen of three rabbits. Troy Ebright of Tractor Supply Co. bought the rabbits for $100.
The reserve champion pen of three rabbits was exhibited by Melissa Gray of Vicksburg. Cliff Lipscomb of Crystal Flash Petroleum paid $80 for the rabbits.
Lylah Parrish of Climax started out the poultry sale with her grand champion roaster. Curtis and Diana Shoup of East Main Animal Hospital purchased the animal for $300.
Brandon Shoffner of Vicksburg sold the reserve champion roaster for $200 to Steve and Deb Newhouse of Newhouse Excavating. Schoffner also sold the grand champion broiler for $200 to Jeff Buckham.
Charlize Gibbs of Scotts earned $400 for the reserve champion broiler. Robert Hartfield of Sleemans Auto Service purchased the animal.
Wednesday Townsend of Augusta sold the grand champion Cornish to Tractor Supply Co. for $225. Natasha Elliot sold the reserve champion for $275 to Ron Balowski of Battle Creek Farm Bureau.
The grand champion tom turkey was sold by Jacob Thiessen of Augusta. The bird brought $375 and was purchased by Brad Gibbs of Bibbs Concrete.
Austin Hakman of Battle Creek exhibited the reserve champion tom turkey, which sold for $225 to Jeff Buckham.
Haley Dalmam of Scotts exhibited the grand champion hen turkey. It sold to Randy Fuller of Athens Ag Center for $500.
The reserve champion hen turkey was sold by Joshua Bolhuis of Climax. Phyllis Auble bought the bird for $225.
There were only two goats sold at the auction. Rebecca Gray of Vicksburg earned $125 for her grand champion dairy goat. Dave Dyer of Dyer Farms purchased the animal.
Brianna Stockwell of Dowagiac sold her grand champion meat goat to Leon Casey for $200.
Kailynne Besser of Kalamazoo earned $200 for her grand champion eggs. She sold a dozen eggs to Larry Crouch.
Celah Dunn of Augusta sold the grand champion duck for $125. Tractor Supply Co. bought the duck. Bella Dunn of Augusta sold the reserve champion duck, which brought $175. Larry Crouch of Feed Bag purchased the animal.
