Allen Auction Generates $145,077

The 2018 Allen County Fair wrapped up last Monday with the annual 4-H livestock auction. This year, a total of 105 lots were sold (138 in 2017) for a total of $145,077 (127,975.83 in 2017).

Starting off the auction was 10-year member William Edwards selling his grand champion commercial poultry. Edwards sold his winning poultry for $1,025 to Red Barn Ranch, Fort Wayne Pet Hospital, Larry Siegel Excavating, Mudrack Tree Service Inc., Hartman Brothers Heating and Air, Milan Center Feed and Grain, and Bonin family. Twenty-six lots of poultry were sold for $15,750.

Dakota Hitzemann was next in the ring with his grand champion barrow. The winning pig racked up a price of $1,955 ($7.08 per pound), selling to a large group of buyers (see list at end of story). Fifty-two pigs were sold for $633,446. The auction also saw 14 of those pigs going to the food bank in the Fort Wayne area.

Sisters Brooke and Taylor Kneubuhler sold their champion and reserve champion, respectively, single fryer in the rabbit auction. Brooke Kneubuhler sold her champion single fryer for $715 to Sauder Feeds Inc., Wayne Lake, Jesswein Farms, Ag Plus-South Whitley, Carol Jesswein, Dale Jesswein and Kleine Farms. Taylor Kneubuhler sold her reserve champion rabbit for $665 to Sauder Feeds Inc., Wayne Lake, Jesswein Farms, Kleine Farms, Dale Jesswein and Carol Jesswein. Twelve lots of rabbits were sold for $10,950.

The grand champion beef steer was sold by Ryan Kleine. Kleine sold his steer for $7,725 to a large group of buyers (see list). Four lots of beef steers were sold for $12,935.

Myra Berning opened the dairy portion of the auction, selling her grand champion dairy cow milk. Berning sold the milk for $1,855 to a large group of buyers (see list). The reserve champion was sold by Alexis Turpchinoff for $585 to A Plus Irrigation Inc., Steve Rohlf family, Milan Center Feed and Grain, Ed Mar Farms, NU Insulation, Bonin family and Norman Berning family. Two lots were sold for $2,440.

William Edwards was the lone goat milk lot. Edwards sold his champion goat milk for $500 to Lynn Stieglitz of Milan Center Feed and Grain.

In the goat portion of the auction, Evan Brubaker sold his grand champion dairy wether for $2,245 to a large group of buyers (see list). Ethan Beaupre was next in the ring, selling his grand champion meat wether. Beaupre sold his goat for $1,570 to a large group of buyers (see list). A total of 32 goats were sold for $16,725.

Holly Howard sold the reserve champion market lamb during the auction. Howard sold her lamb to Milan Center Feed and Grain, Lisa Lutes and Shipshewana Auction and Flee Market and Farm for $375. The grand champion market lamb was shown by Micah Malcolm and did not sell. Seven lots of sheep were sold for $3,18.

Wrapping up the auction were the dairy beef steers and dairy beef feeders. The grand champion dairy steer was exhibited by Korbin Parker. Parker did not sell and will exhibit at the Indiana State Fair. Four lots were sold for $7,100. The grand champion feeder calf was exhibited by Danika Dafforn. Dafforn did not sell and plans to exhibit at the Indiana State Fair. Four lots of feeder calves were sold for $1,050.
