Over $581,000 Raised at Cass Youth Auction

The Cass County Fair in Cassopolis, Mich. held the annual livestock auction last Thursday and Saturday. This year's proceeds earned 4-H'ers a total of $581,667.74 on 933 lots. Last year, the sale totaled $643,684.02 on 998 lots.

Callie High started out the beef sale with her grand champion market beef steer. The steer weighed in at 1,410 pounds and earned $4.50 per pound, or $6,345. Hartford Glass Buyers Club, Mike Breisch purchased the steer.

The reserve champion market beef steer was sold by Austin Smego. The animal weighed 1,230 pounds and brought $4 per pound, or $4,920. Jodie Walker of JayWalker Restaurant purchased the steer.

Kyla Sparks earned grand champion for her dairy beef steer. She sold the 1,525-pound animal for $1.90 per pound ($2,897.50) at the auction. Wayne High of High Farms purchased the steer.

The reserve champion dairy beef steer earned $2 per pound ($3,120) for exhibitor Rebecca Swartz. The steer weighed 1,560. Cade and Eva Klein of Klein Seed Sales (Pioneer) bought the animal.

There was a total of 47 beef sold during the auction, raising a total of $60,360.

In the beef feeder auction, Austin Smego sold his reserve champion beef feeder for $3.75 per pound, or $1,650. The calf weighed 440 pounds and sold to Dennis and Tina Wimberley.

Seven beef feeders sold at the auction and brought a total of $8,556.25.

Nicholas Bradley sold his grand champion dairy feeder for $6,960 ($12 per pound). The 580-pound calf was purchased by David Mathews of Southern Michigan College.

Brianna Stockwell's reserve champion dairy feeder weighed in at 650 pounds. She sold her calf for $2.50 per pound, or $1,625 to Gail Vonderkolk of Burnips Equipment Co. in Three Rivers.

The auction sold 73 dairy feeder calves that brought a total of $91,662.50.

Ash Kapala started out the swine sale with her grand champion market hog. The pig, weighing 263 pounds, sold for $5,084 ($18 per pound) to Kalmabach Feeds, Community Mills, Butch Bender, Southwestern Michigan College and Chuck Wimberly of C Wimberly Auto Group Ford.

The reserve champion market hog title was earned by Kaden Sparks' project. His barrow weighed 266 pounds. Buyer purchased the pig for $4.25 per pound, or $1,130.50. Tom and Lois Radtke purchased the hog.

The auction sold 177 swine lots, earning exhibitors $165,774 total.

The first exhibitor to sell a lamb during the auction was Jena Bradley. She sold her 157-pound grand champion market lamb for $3,611 ($21 per pound). Leslie Bradley of Hibshman Screw Machine, Paul and Kathy Sweitzer, and Edd's Supplies Inc. bought the wether.

Katherine Gregory earned reserve champion for her market lamb. The wether weighed 165 pounds and was purchased for $6 per pound, or $990. Southwestern Michigan College bought the lamb.

There were 83 lamb lots that sold for $57,201.74 total.

Members of the Youth dairy project sold a gallon of milk at the livestock auction. The proceeds from the sale was split among the exhibitors based on their achievements at the fair. The milk sold for $10,615.

The Youth draft horse exhibitors sold a director's chair at the auction. Proceeds from the chair were split among the exhibitors and amounts were determined by their achievements during the fair. The chair brought $2,200.

The small animal auction took place last Saturday.

The grand champion goose was sold by Lauren Ridenour. Brian Nordan of Calvin Creek Farms purchased the goose for $210. Ridenour also sold the reserve champion goose. Rick Briney of R.B. Trucking purchased the animal for $200.

There were a total of eight geese sold during the sale and brought a total for $1,070.

Carter Newland sold the grand champion market broiler. Brian Nordan of Calvin Creek Farms purchased the bird for $500.

The grand champion market roaster earned Alyssa Wright $325. Nathan and Amanda Wilson of Wilson's Farrier Service and Everett Smith family purchased the roaster.

The champion market heavyweight was sold by Madeline Collins. Jon Tone of Nutech Seed purchased the animal for $200.

Brandon Newland earned reserve champion market broiler with his project. He sold the bird for $150 to Brian Nordan of Calvin Creek Farms.

Seth Newland showed the reserve champion market roaster. Dave and Stacey High of High Quality Farms purchased the animal for $160.

The reserve champion market heavyweight earned $500 for Gabriel Tone. The animal was purchased by Steve Green of Division Tire, Steve Green of Decatur Auto and Butch Bender.

A total of 99 poultry lots sold to raise $19,930.

In the rabbit sale, Morgan Hartline sold the grand champion fryer. Community Mills paid $600 for the rabbit.

Jami Suseland earned grand champion roaster rabbit. The animal sold for $1,050 at the auction. Buyers include Pearl Suseland, Jay and Suzy Suseland of Suseland Belgians, John Baker of Elk Park Feed Store, Porky's, Jeff, Sharon and Madison Suseland of Suseland Farm Percherons, Morgan, Bob, Jody, Jason and Erin, Clipper Creations, and Mark Dussel of Dussel's Farm Market.

The reserve champion fryer brought $500 and was exhibited by Ella Boulanger. Jon Blough of B&Q Machine purchased the rabbit.

Anna Leach sold her reserve champion roaster for $200 to Southwestern Michigan College.

In the rabbit sale, 231 lots raked in $53,305.

Emily Luthringer started out the goat sale. Her grand champion non-dairy goat brought $350. Kelli Davis of Emily Luthringer's Buyer Group and Jeff and Stacy Toy of Lake X-Ray purchased the goat.

The grand champion dairy goat was exhibited by Holly Lawson. The goat was purchased by Dennis Ralston for $290.

Jena Bradley sold her reserve champion non-dairy goat to Leslie Bradley of Hibshman Screw Machine. The animal sold for $275.

Sydnie Wellman earned reserve champion dairy goat for her project. The animal sold for $250 to Craig Hartsell of Cass U-Stor.

Eighty-nine goats sold at the auction, raising $26,165.

The grand champion turkey tom was shown by Jered Wellman. The turkey brought $350 at the auction and sold to John and Amanda Solloway, and Tona and Gary Solloway of Tina's Styling Salon. Wellman also sold the grand champion turkey hen. Lauren Thurston of Chemical Bank bought the hen for $250.

Nicole Wilson earned reserve champion for her turkey tom. Brian Nordan of Calvin Creek Farms, Lesley Steensma of Diamond Lake Day Care, and Jesse Binns contributed to the final sale price of $180.

The reserve champion turkey hen was sold by Gage Collins. Karen Wright of Wright and Girls bought the hen for $300.

The sale included 17 turkey lots that brought $3,760.

Audriauna Brown's grand champion duck sold for $250 at the auction. Steve Green of Division Tire and Decatur Auto purchased the duck.

Quianna Murray earned $250 for her reserve champion duck. Jim Leach of J.L. Landscaping purchased the animal.

The duck sale included 99 lots and raised $18,195 from supporters.
