Schutz Leaving Purdue for Minnesota Position

Michael Schutz, currently a professor in the Department of Animal Science at Purdue University and the assistant director of Extension, has accepted the position of professor and head in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Minnesota. He will join the university on June 11.

Schutz's ties with the University of Minnesota are strong—receiving both his bachelor's ('84) and master's degrees ('89) in animal science there. He earned his doctorate in animal breeding and genetics at Iowa State University and did his post-doctoral training in dairy cattle genetics at the USDA Animal Improvement Programs Laboratory.

As a faculty member, Schutz has engaged in all aspects of the land-grant mission including research, resident teaching and Extension. He has received numerous awards for his scholarship and Extension programming, including the Eric G. Sharvelle Purdue University Distinguished Extension Specialist Award and appointment as president of the Dairy Practices Council.

In addition, Schutz has served as a member of the Dairy Extension Executive Council for USDA-Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service and has served as senior editor of the Journal of Animal Science.
