54% of Corn Crop in Good Condition

The following is from the Indiana Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service for the week ending July 16.

Rain early in the week continued to impede field-work. Warm, humid, stormy weather was followed by cooler drier weather at the end of the week.

Storms in the central portion of the state brought severe winds that knocked down trees and caused property damage.

The statewide average temperature was 75.1 degrees, .1 degrees above normal.

Statewide precipitation was 1.76 inches, above average by .83 inches.

There were 3.5 days available for fieldwork, down .8 days from the previous week.

Regionally, corn was 27 percent silked in the North, 39 percent in Central, and 63 percent in the South.

Corn rated in good to excellent condition was 54 percent in the North, 40 percent in Central, and 50 percent in the South.

Soybeans were 44 percent blooming in the North, 54 percent in Central, and 52 percent in the South.

Soybeans rated in good to excellent condition were 53 percent in the North, 42 percent in Central, and 54 percent in the South.

Winter wheat was 56 percent harvested in the North, 84 percent in Central, and 96 percent in the South.

The cooler, drier weather in the latter part of the week allowed for herbicide and fungicide applications. Disease concerns rose in the wake of the wet weather.

Mint harvest has begun. Cucumber harvest is in full swing. Hay fields and pastures are in good shape and growing with all the rains. Livestock were reported in good condition on average.

Other activities include attending county fairs, baling straw and finishing certifying acres at FSA offices.

Topsoil moisture was rated very short, 0 percent; short, 7 percent; adequate, 66 percent; surplus, 27 percent.

Subsoil moisture was rated very short, 1 percent; short, 8 percent; adequate, 69 percent; surplus, 22 percent.

The crop progress schedule (last week, previous week, 2016 and 5-year average) show corn silking, 39, 19, 46, 51,; soybeans bloomimg, 50, 31, 53, 52; soybeans setting pods, 13, 1, 17, 14; winter wheat harvested, 90, 78, 94, 84; alfalfa hay, second cutting, 65, 54, 77, 66; other hay, second cutting, 54, 43, 53, NA.
