A multidisciplinary team of faculty and staff from the Purdue University College of Agriculture has developed a new web site with information that addresses the complex economic, environmental, health and public policy issues related to genetically modified organisms.
Called The Science of GMOs, the site was specifically designed for users with limited or no scientific background. It features text and videos that clearly explain some of the most important questions agricultural producers and consumers have about GMOs.
"Our goal is to share this research-based information with the general public and to promote balanced, informed and responsible discussions regarding this technology," said Jay Akridge, Dean of Agriculture at Purdue.
Experts contributing to the website and their topics are:
• Rick Meilan, professor of molecular tree physiology: "What are GMOs?"
• Peter Goldsbrough, professor of botany and plant pathology: "Why do we use GMOs?" and "Do GMOs harm health?"
• Christian Krupke, professor of entomology: "How do GMOs affect insects?"
• Marshall Martin, professor of agricultural economics: "How does the regulation process work?"
• Ken Foster, professor of agricultural economics: "What's the story on GMOs and labeling?"
