Lake Co. Auction Tops $148,000

Lake County 4-H'ers sold $148,174.88 worth of livestock and milk during the 4-H fair on Aug. 13 in Crown Point. That surpassed the 2015 total of $128,660.

For the second year in a row, Noah and Zack Hayden of Lowell exhibited the top beef animals. Noah sold the grand champion steer, weighing 1,395 pounds, for $3.50 per pound ($4,882.50). Zach sold the reserve champion steer for $2.50 per pound ($3,137.50). His steer weighed 1,255 pounds.

Robert Corning brought the grand champion beef carcass, earning $2.50 per pound ($3,475). Cole Clinton sold the reserve champi-on beef carcass for $2.25 per pound ($2,936.25).

Noah Hayden also captured the top prize in the swine show. He sold the 244-pound grand champion barrow for $5.50 per pound ($1,342) to Ceres Solutions. Jacob McCay was next with the reserve champion barrow. He earned $6 per pound ($1,680) for the 280-pounder.

McCay also showed the grand champion gilt, earning $4.50 per pound ($1,242) for the 276-pounder. Mackenzie Hein sold the 229-pound reserve champion gilt for $2.50 per pound ($572.50).

Robert Corning led the way in the swine carcass show, selling the grand champion for $6.50 per pound ($1,878.50). Liz Sever sold the reserve champion swine carcass for $3.50 per pound ($927.50).

In sheep, Kaylee Jensen sold the reserve champion lamb for $12 per pound ($1,620).

Liz Sever sold the grand champion sheep carcass for $6 per pound ($750). Maggie Sever's reserve champion sheep carcass brought $4 per pound ($500).

In goats, Aaron DuBord exhibited the grand champion dairy wether and received $1,300. Jamie Reed's re-serve champion dairy wether fetched $200.

Clara Reed swept the top two awards in the meat goat show. She sold the grand champion wether for $300 and the reserve champion for the same price, with both animals going to Kraft Auction Service.

Emily Reed sold milk from her grand champion senior doe for $1,000. Emma Carrillo received $200 for reserve champion doe milk.

Three lots of dairy milk were sold, with Nickliss Cross earning $750 for milk from his champion senior Holstein. Robert Corning received $400 for reserve champion Holstein milk.

Joy Moore picked up $400 from the sale of her champion AOB (any other breed) cow. The buyer was Lake County Farm Bureau.

In poultry, Dakota Sepko topped the chicken sale, earning $300 from Gleaners, with her grand champion dressed broilers. Emily Sepko showed the reserve champion turkey, which brought $500.
